How the formula generator works
Write the request the way you’d ask a colleague who’s good at Excel.
Describe the result
Say what to calculate, which columns hold the data and any conditions.
Pick your Excel
Excel 365 gets XLOOKUP, FILTER and LET. Older versions get formulas that work there.
Copy and paste
Mindy explains each part, gives an example and warns you about common traps.
Examples of what Mindy writes
Typical requests and the formulas they turn into.
| You ask for | Formula |
|---|---|
| Total sales in column C where the region in column B is North | =SUMIFS(C:C, B:B, "North") |
| The price for the product code in A2, from a sheet called Products (codes in column A, prices in column C) | =XLOOKUP(A2, Products!A:A, Products!C:C, "Not found") |
| The same lookup for Excel 2019 or older | =IFERROR(INDEX(Products!C:C, MATCH(A2, Products!A:A, 0)), "Not found") |
| Working days between the dates in A2 and B2 | =NETWORKDAYS(A2, B2) |
| The first name from a full name in A2 | =TEXTBEFORE(A2, " ") |
| “Overdue” when the due date in D2 has passed and E2 isn’t “Paid” | =IF(AND(D2<TODAY(), E2<>"Paid"), "Overdue", "") |
| Average order value for the customer in A2, from an Orders sheet | =AVERAGEIFS(Orders!D:D, Orders!B:B, A2) |
Tips for a formula that works first time
The more Mindy knows about your sheet, the less you’ll need to adjust.
- Name the columns. “Amounts are in column D, dates in A” beats “add up the sales”.
- Say whether there are headers and where the data starts, if it’s not row 2.
- Mention other sheets by name, exactly as they appear on the tab.
- Say what should happen with blanks and errors — show 0, leave empty, or show a message.
- Check your separator. Some countries use semicolons between arguments:
=SUMIFS(C:C; B:B; "North").
Excel Formula Generator questions
How do I get the best formula?
Say what you want to calculate, where the data is and any conditions, for example “Sum column D where column B is North and column A is in March”. Adding your column layout in “Your columns” lets Mindy use the exact references.
Which Excel versions are supported?
Choose Excel 365 / 2021+ to get modern functions like XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE and LET. Choose Excel 2019 or older and Mindy sticks to functions that exist there, such as INDEX/MATCH and SUMIFS.
Why does my formula show an error when I paste it?
Some countries use semicolons instead of commas between arguments. If Excel rejects the formula, replace the commas with semicolons. Also check that sheet names and ranges match your file.
Is the formula generator free?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up. Every visitor gets 25 free AI credits a day, and each formula uses one.
Can it write formulas for my actual spreadsheet?
Yes. Open your file in the MindySheets workspace and use “Write a formula for this file” on the Formulas tab. Mindy already knows your headers and column letters.
