Google Sheets formulas, written for you

Google Sheets has functions Excel doesn’t, like QUERY and ARRAYFORMULA. Mindy uses them when they’re the simplest answer.

You ask forFormula
Only the rows from the Orders sheet where Status (column E) is Open=FILTER(Orders!A2:F, Orders!E2:E="Open")
A table of total revenue (column D) by region (column B)=QUERY(A1:D, "select B, sum(D) where B is not null group by B label sum(D) 'Revenue'", 1)
Add 15% to every price in column B, without copying the formula down=ARRAYFORMULA(IF(B2:B="", "", B2:B * 1.15))
A sorted list of unique customers from column C, ignoring blanks=SORT(UNIQUE(FILTER(C2:C, C2:C<>"")))
TRUE if the email address in A2 looks valid=REGEXMATCH(A2, "^[^@\s]+@[^@\s]+\.[^@\s]+$")
Column A from another spreadsheet=IMPORTRANGE("spreadsheet URL", "Sheet1!A:A")

Excel or Google Sheets?

Most everyday functions work the same in both. The differences catch people out when a formula moves between them.

  • Only in Google Sheets: QUERY, ARRAYFORMULA, IMPORTRANGE, GOOGLEFINANCE, SPLIT and the REGEX functions.
  • Both: XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE, SORT, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, INDEX and MATCH.
  • Sheet names with spaces need single quotes in both: 'Sales Data'!A:A.
  • Moving to Excel? Switch the app selector to Excel 365 and ask again — Mindy rewrites QUERY-style formulas with FILTER, SUMIFS or a PivotTable approach.

Google Sheets Formula Generator questions

Does it use Google Sheets–only functions?

Yes, when they’re the best fit: QUERY, ARRAYFORMULA, FILTER, SPLIT, REGEXMATCH, REGEXEXTRACT, IMPORTRANGE and GOOGLEFINANCE among others.

Can I use these formulas in Excel?

Not always. Functions like QUERY and ARRAYFORMULA don’t exist in Excel. Switch the app to Excel 365 and Mindy will write an Excel version.

Why does Google Sheets say “Formula parse error”?

Usually it’s a separator issue (some locales use semicolons), a missing quote around text, or a sheet name with spaces that needs single quotes like 'Sales Data'!A:A.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, 25 free AI credits a day, one credit per formula.

Can Mindy explain a Google Sheets formula too?

Yes. Switch to “Explain a formula”, paste it in and choose Google Sheets.
